Registration and Logging in
Why can't I log in?
To log into the community, you must use the user name and password that you entered when you registered as a member. If you have not yet registered, you must do so before you can log in (unless you log in a Guest). If you have registered and are still unable to log in, check to see that you have cookies enabled on your Web browser. You may need to add this Web site to your browser's list of trusted sites. If you are banned from the community, this may prevent you from logging in, in which case, check with the administrator.

Do I need to register?
You may not need to register to post messages. It is up to the administrator as to whether they allow you to post messages or replies as an unregistered user. However, by registering, you will be able to use additional features. It only takes a couple of minutes to register, so it is recommended that you do so.

Lost Passwords
If you have lost your password, don't panic. Although passwords can not be retrieved, they can be reset. To reset your password, click on the Login button. At the bottom of the login page, you will see a link to the lost-password page where you can request that a new password be e-mailed to you. If this option is not available or you do not have a valid e-mail address in your profile, you must contact the administrator or a moderator and ask them to change your password for you.

I registered in the past but can't log in.
It could be that you haven't posted anything for a while, or never posted anything. It is common for the administrator to periodically delete users from the database to free up user names and reduce the size of the database.

User Preferences and Settings
How do I change my application settings?
You can change your settings, profile information, registration details, etc. from your Member Control Panel menu once you have logged in.

Dates and/or times are not set to my local time.
The date and time used in the messages is determined by the time zone where the server is located. To change the posted dates and times to your own local settings, simply edit your Preferences through your Member Control Panel, and set the number of hours by which to offset the server-determined times. The application is not designed to adjust between standard time and daylight saving time, so you may need to adjust the time in your Preferences by another hour during these months.

What does my rank indicate?
Ranks indicate which user group you are a member of and classify users -- for example, moderators and administrators may have a special rank. Depending on the setup of the application, you may be able to use different features depending on your rank.

Can I change my rank?
If the administrator has set up ranks using the ladder system, you may be able to move up groups based on the number of messages you have posted.

Posting Issues
How do I post a message?
To post a message, click on the relevant button on the forum or topic screen. Depending on how the administrator has set up the forum, you may need to log in before you can post a message. The facilities available to you in each of the forums are listed at the bottom of the topic screen.

How do I delete messages?
Unless you are a Moderator or an Administrator, you can only delete your own messages and only if the forum has been setup with the rights for you to be able to delete your own messages. If someone has replied to your message, you will no longer be able to delete it.

How do I edit messages?
Unless you are a Moderator or an Administrator, you can only edit your own messages and only if the administrator has enabled you to do so. When you edit your own messages, depending on the forum setup, the user name, time, and date when the message was edited will be displayed at the bottom of the message.

How do I add a signature to my message?
If the administrator has allowed the use of signatures in messages, you can add a signature to the bottom of each of your messages. To do so, you must create a signature in your 'Profile Information' through your Member Control Panel Menu. Once you have done this, you can add your signature to the bottom of your messages by checking the 'Show Signature' checkbox at the bottom of the message form.

How do I create a poll?
If you have sufficient rights to create a poll in a forum, you will see a 'New Poll' button at the top of the screen on the forum and topic screens. When creating a poll, enter a poll question and at least two options for the poll. You may also select whether people can vote multiple times or just once in the poll.

Why am I unable to view a forum?
Some forums are set up to allow only certain users or groups of users to access them. To view, read, post messages, etc. in a forum, you may first need permission which only a moderator or administrator can grant you.

Rich Text Editor (WYSIWYG) posting issues
If you are using Internet Explorer 5+ (Windows only), Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.3+, or Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1+, and if the administrator has enabled the feature, you can use a Rich Text (WYSIWYG) Editor to type your messages. If you find that you are having problems posting using the WYSIWYG editor, you can disable this WYSIWYG Editor by simply editing your profile and selecting to turn off the WYSIWYG Posting Editor.

Message Formatting
What are Formatting Codes?
Formatting Codes allow you to format the messages you post. Formatting Codes are very similar to HTML except that tags are enclosed in square brackets, [ and ], rather than, < and >. You can also disable Formatting Codes when posting a message. Click here to view Formatting Codes that are available.

Can I use HTML?
HTML cannot be used in your messages. This is restricted for security reasons as malicious HTML code can be used to destroy the layout of the forum or even crash a Web browser when a user tries to view a message.

What are emoticons (smilies)?
Emoticons or Smilies are small, graphical images that can be used to express feelings or show emotions. If the administrators have allowed Emoticons in messages, you can see them next to the posting form when posting a message. To add an emoticon to your message, simply click on the emoticon you would like to add.

Can I post images?
Images can be added to your messages if the administrator has enabled uploading of images. You can use this to upload an image from your own computer into your message. However, if image uploading is not available, you can link to a image that is stored on a publicly accessible web server -- e.g., http://www.mysite.com/my-picture.jpg.

What are closed topics?
Closed topics are set this way by administrators or moderators. Once a topic is closed, you will no longer be able to post a reply in that topic or vote in a poll.

User Groups
What are Administrators?
Administrators are people who have the highest level of control over the application. They have the ability to turn features on and off, ban particular users from participating, remove users, edit and delete messages, create users groups, etc.

What are Forum Moderators?
Moderators are users or groups of users who look after the day-to-day running of the community. They have the power to edit, delete, move, close, unclose, topics and messages in the forums they moderate. Moderators are generally there to prevent people from posting offensive or abusive material.

What are User Groups?
User groups are a way to group users. Each user is a member of a user group, and each group can be assigned specific rights in forums to read, view, post, create polls, etc.

Private Messaging
I cannot send private messages.
There may be several reasons for this: you are not logged in, you are not registered, or the administrators have disabled the Private Messaging system.

I cannot send private messages to some users.
This may be because the person to whom you are trying to send a Private Message has blocked you sending Private Messages to them. If this is the case, you will receive a message informing you of this when you try to send them a Private Message.

How can I prevent someone from sending me private messages?
If you do find that you are getting unwanted Private Messages from a user, you can block them from sending you Private Messages. To do so, go into the Private Messaging system, and go to your buddy list. Go to add the user as a buddy, but instead choose the option from the dropdown list 'Not to message you'. This will prevent that user from sending you any more Private Messages.
